Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese system of exercise designed to improve health and vitality. It is a slow and graceful series of dance like movements known as “the Form”, which after regular practice will gently stimulate and relax you. In time the mind learns to experience a stillness and the body a calmness that helps alleviate the stresses and strains of modern everyday life.
It looks easy to do, yet when you first start practising you find that it calls upon muscles, energy, balance and control that you thought you had but which simply are not there. However, you will gradually build up these powers in your body and mind, creating a wholeness you never new you lacked.
The class is divided roughly into three parts. Warm up exercises, consisting of circling and stretching, which give the Student time to tune into his/her Body and start the process of releasing tension and stress accumulated during the day. This is followed by a series of gentle breathing exercises and a period of standing still in good posture “like a tree”. We then move onto Tai Chi itself when “The Form” as it is known is learned and practised. Finally to end the evening, we have a short period of relaxation, not a deep meditation but a few minutes of peace where everybody can experience a stillness and inner reflection.
